I require that every monetized API meters usage accurately and makes the units it counts explicit, so both the provider and the consumer agree on exactly what is being measured and billed. Metering is the foundation of any honest cost model, and if we cannot count consistently we cannot charge fairly or let a consumer predict their bill. I care about this because opaque or inconsistent metering erodes trust faster than almost anything else in an API relationship, and it makes analytics and forecasting impossible for everyone involved. Every API that charges for use must define and publish how it meters, and expose that usage so consumers can observe it themselves.
