I require that the full cost of running an API is made visible through FinOps practices, so the people making decisions about an API can see what it actually costs to operate, not just what it earns. Every API in production should surface its cost signals alongside its usage and revenue, because a program that only measures adoption and ignores spend is flying blind toward an unpleasant surprise. I hold this position because sustainability is a governance concern, and an API we cannot afford to run is not a reliable API no matter how popular it becomes. FinOps visibility is how we keep the economics of our APIs honest and the whole portfolio sustainable over time.
